John Hart spent a week at the Antler Ridge Deer Ranch in Sterling, Michigan as guests of Ed & Judy Gilkes. Ed is a John Hart fan and a collector of assorted cowboy memorabilia as well. Ed has a museum on his ranch where he displays his Roy Rogers shirt, a Roy Rogers saddle, a black Lone Ranger saddle, a Sergeant Preston of the Yukon costume, the original Hawkeye costume that John wore in the show and many other outfits and pieces of memorabilia.

A local newspaper, The Ogemaw County Herald, had some coverage of John's visit to the area including a couple of stories in the Herald and a photo of John and the 3 Cagle brothers who portray their favorite cowboys, Rooster Cogburn, The Lone Ranger and The "Duke". John appeared in two 4th of July parades, the Rose City parade and the West Branch parade. Also in the Thursday, July 12, 2001 edition of the Herald, was a photo of John Hart and Lon Chaney, Jr. as Hawkeye & Chingachgook. Another photo from one of the parades was one of the three Cagle brothers dressed as their favorite cowboys and riding their horses.

Another local newspaper, the Arenac County Independent, in Standish, Michigan, also had coverage of John's visit to the area including a couple of stories and a photo of John and the 3 Cagle brothers who portray their favorite cowboys, "Rooster Cogburn", "The Lone Ranger" and "The Duke". There was also a photo of John as "Hawkeye" and Lon Chaney, Jr. as "Chingachgook". The Arenac County Independent also had a nice feature story on Ed Gilkes in their Wednesday, May 16, 2001 edition. Included were several photos of some of Ed's collection of cowboy memorabilia.
